MTHFR: A Folate-Metabolism Gene Mutation
As we have said, folate is our favorite topic today and we close with the most important products in this package about our favorite nutrient. Proper folate metabolism requires a series of enzyme reactions and you are very likely to be deficient in a key one.
MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. It is an enzyme deficiency affecting 40-50% of Americans. MTHFR can cause serious health problems. MTHFR is an important chemical reaction involving forms of the B-vitamin folate (also called folic acid or vitamin B9).
Many people learn they have an MTHFR gene polymorphism due to frequent miscarriages, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, or cancer.
