I’ve done the bulk of my grocery shopping for the month and wanted to share it with you. Our food budget for the month is $505 and our month runs from May 23 to June 22 to coincide with my husband’s once a month pay. I’m starting the month with a fairly decent freezer stock and a good pantry supply (I do have a few less things than my inventory indicates, I shared some of the lamb I was given and a couple of packages of game with another family).
Here is how I planned to spend our $505 for the month:
Cow Share: $54
Beef CSA: $50
Azure Standard: $224
Grocery Store(s): $125
Dining Out: $50
And here is what I have already spent:
Cow Share: $54 (paid on 5/23)
One Grocery Store trip (this will be my major trip for the month): $69.41 (5/27)
I brought home:
Hunt’s Ketchup (no HFCS in this brand now)- $2.24
2 ears of corn- .38
Red leaf lettuce- 1.68
1 pound Raw Shrimp- $5.00
2 pounds Mussels- $3.50
Side of Wild Salmon- $6.98
Cucumber- .88
3 pounds onions- $3.88
2 Avocados- $1.00
Romaine Lettuce-$1.68
Dark Cocoa- $2.76
Tea Bags- $1.00
Buttermilk- .54
Baking Soda- .48
Sliced olives- $1.16
Cornstarch- .88
Green onions- .98
.91 pounds bananas- .45
Coffee- $10.00
Milk- $3.64
4 pounds butter- $7.92
Peanut butter- $2.92
Pineapple- .98
White vinegar- $1.96
Sour Cream- $4.52
10 pounds potatoes- $2.00
My Azure order also came this week. I was only shorted one item (25 pounds of Sucanat). Total for the order (including shipping charges): $179.43
I have spent a total of $323.93. I still have my Beef CSA coming up ($50), $41.88 for Dining Out, and $42.62 for Grocery Store. Plus since I didn’t get my entire Azure Standard order I have a surplus from that of $44.53 which I may (or may not) add to my Grocery Store amount. I’ll just wait and see if we need it. I feel like we are in pretty good shape as far as food on hand for the month. But I do know that one weakness we tend to have is in the Dining Out area. And with school getting out today, I’ll have two teen girls home all the time. I anticipate that some days the kitchen may be quite busy which may cause me to make more trips to the store than I’m planning for. We’ll see how it goes. I hope you will come back each Monday and see my Menu Plans for the week.
>I need to check our spending. I started a open office doc for this purpose, starting today with payday.
I also wanted to let you know to watch Tropical Traditions' sales. I rec'ed a few weeks ago:
5 gallons CO
2 16oz coconut cream concentrate
It was less than $130 after shipping. MUCH cheaper than Azure's CO. The CO is not organic (choose your battles, right?), but the CCC is. Might help you save some money if you frequent their site regularly, and you can get some of their deals. Sometimes they have BOGO deals, sometimes it's free shipping, and you can combine these types of deals (for example, BOGO 1-gals of CO with free shipping, etc).
>Michaela,
Thanks for letting me know about Tropical Traditions. I signed up for their newsletter.
I've been hesitant to try any other brand of coconut oil mostly because we like the flavor of the Wilderness Family Naturals we get. But those are good prices.
